I have mentioned several times on this blog how much I LOVE my cat, Sir. I couldn’t imagine not having him and I expect to live a long happy life together. But today, I’m excited to share with you how my fur baby and I crossed paths!
So, to give you a bit of a back story I became a little obsessed with adopting one of the strays that my apartment complex had. There were a lot of cats, and several of them were really friendly. I tried on a few occasions to give a cat a forever home there. Honestly, I had even named several of them. But it was tough to find my one and only.
He was a black cat that I named Kage (Japanese for shadow.) He was an older cat and had clearly been a stray for the past couple of years. I was hopeful that he would see I wanted to give him a forever home. I invited him inside, fed him often and prayed that he wouldn’t leave. But after he finished his food, he always left. I knew what this was…. A good ole friends with benefits situation. I was okay with it for the mean time, but I knew I deserved commitment.
I named him Mama (I eventually had to change it to Papa for obvious reasons…whoops!) It took me weeks to gain his trust. He walked around the complex and, after multiple attempts, he let me pet him! That petting soon led to regular feeding and that led to him staying over for days on end. Soon, I was ready to take the next step and I took him to the vet for his shots. But sadly, he wasn’t as ready to commit because he stopped coming by as often. Ah, my first real heartbreak.
After Papa, I decided to focus on me. I wasn’t going to beg any more felines to love me! But then, it happened, I met her. She was was a baby Orange Tabby and a woman was asking around hoping someone would adopt her. Suddenly, she was asking me and I said yes immediately. I’ll never forget our first night together, I was ready to love her with all of my heart. But the next morning her original owner came by and said she regretted giving her away. Since I’m not a monster, I gave her back. I should’ve known it was just a one night stand.
Well, that’s 1..2..3 strikes you’re out!
That’s what I thought to myself. I had given my whole heart to 3 fluffy cats and it had been broken every time. I moped all day on the couch, wondering why I didn’t deserve their love. But then I looked myself in the mirror and said “Brie, stop waiting around hoping to find the one. Go out there and make it happen.”
Love at first site?
I began swiping online through several adoptable kittens. Believe me, there were plenty. There wasn’t a shortage of cats, and while that made me a little sad, I was happy knowing I would be able to save one of them. I guess you could say I was little hung up on my one night stand because I became smitten with this little boy who was also an Orange Tabby. He was adorable…and I knew he had to be mine.
I met him on the other side of town and after I held him in my arms for a little, I knew I had chosen right. We took the journey back together and he talked the whole way! What a conversationalist. Once we got home I could tell he was a little shy, but I waited it out. I let him look around and eventually he relaxed. Then he began to cuddle up to me and fall asleep in my arms. It was perfect.
Look how small!
Happily Ever After
It’s been about 8 months since we met, and I couldn’t be happier. We shared my birthday, the Holidays and even rang in the New Year together. He’s grown up to be big and his tail is fluffier than ever. In his youth, he was rambunctious and wild. But as he’s gotten a little older he is definitely calming down more.
My favorite thing about him is the way he cuddles with me. He won’t do it to other people, but he loves to bury his head into my shoulder and cover his head with my hair. We will lay like that for a while with lots of petting and purring. It assures me that we were meant to be. Even if we didn’t cross paths by chance alone, I am so glad that everything I went through led me to my loving boy!
